What will you be teaching?
If you are up for becoming an English Teacher in London, you will already know what the job entails.
You will be responsible for delivering a curriculum covering skills and content areas, including English Literature and English Language. A curriculum that is designed to help students read, write, speak and understand English. Teaching students to analyse the texts, express what they want to say and make them understand the richness of the language. You will be teaching across Key Stages 3,4, and 5.
Key Stage 3 (Ages 11-14)
Key Stage 3 is where you will be teaching the students from the age of 11 to 14. This Key stage is more of an introductory stage, an introduction to the novels, poetry, plays and non-fiction writings. Guiding students through contemporary and classic literature. Helping them to understand character development, use of the themes and how to use and implement the language. Also helping the students to learn different writing styles, from critical to analytical.
With all that, as an English teacher, you will also be focusing on students’ grammatical and linguistic skills. The fundamentals of Grammar, Punctuation, Reading, Tenses, use of the vowels and spelling will be taught.
Key Stage 4 (Ages 14-16)
At Key Stage 4, you will help students with GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) qualifications. Drama, prose, and poetry from different periods are covered in this stage, which may include Shakespeare, modern texts and other 19th-century novels.
You will be teaching how to analyse texts and context, focusing on themes, and how authors use language. You will also be helping students with writing skills and crafting essays that require critical thinking.
Helping the students to study non-fiction, making them practice in various forms. You will also be helping in developing oral skills, with students required to take part in debates.
Key Stage 5 (Ages 16-18)
This stage involves advanced literature analysis and exploring complex texts. Being an A-level teacher of English, you will be teaching in-depth subjects such as English Literature, English Language, or combined English Language and Literature.
Things get wider, more advanced here and challenging in the key stage 5. You will be responsible for students, preparing them for the universities and their careers ahead.
